    Perth Student Placement

    Hi!
I am a UK student going to Perth in May/June this year for my elective clinical placement - would love to hear from anyone else in similar situation (esp if Perth or even Australia!)

Also if anyone else has already done an elective in Australia - would love to hear any tales and any advice would be much appreciated!!

    Hi!

    Undergrad or postgrad?
    Where are you going?
What are you going to be doing?
What do you want to know?

Is it the clinical placement for ACOPRA ( Australian Council of Physiotherapy Regulating authorities)? Could you be more specific.

    Re: Perth Student Placement

    Hi!

Thanks for your responses and sorry for my delay in getting back to you. It's an undergraduate clinical placement as final part of my UK degree course in a clinic in Perth. I was just wondering if there were any kindred spirits out there really to be in touch with & swap experiences etc...thinking I can't be the only Brit student about to descend on Australia!

I have lots of queries really. For instance, my placement have advised I swot up on electrotherapy, but other than this I was wondering what manual skills are commonly used...and has anyone noticed any differences in techniques used between Australian and UK physios?

    Re: Perth Student Placement

    Hi

Depends on where you are working / doing your clinical at. Electrotherapy is ok but to be honest, it is certainly not everything that we have to offer here in Oz, esp in WA.

Motor Control Dysfunction is the baby of Peter B O'Sullivan who is right here in WA so a lot of people know about his work.

Maitland mobilisations and manipulations are taught throughout undergrad here so expect to use that stuff. Mulligans and Muscle Energy less so but still valid. A lot of people like the Mackenzie method as well.

Lastly, Australians are really friendly so it shouldn't be a problem to meet new people. Also, Perth is full of people from the UK and Ireland so you will feel right at home, especially at Northbridge which is just north of the city centre...

    Enjoy!
