    MSc Pre Registration

    Hi everyone

I'm on the look out for some advice re master of physiotherapy (pre registration) courses in the uk and australia. I have applied to all universities which provide this course, and I am waiting to hear back from them.

Does anyone have any idea which uni offers the best in terms of clinical placements and education.

    All replies greatfully recieved!!
    Cheers

    Re: MSc Pre Registration

    Hi
When you say pre registration, does this mean that you are entering an entry level PT course at Master's level?

    Thanks for the clarification.
Which univerities have you applied to? "All" doesn't allow anyone to comment on the programs and give you any advice.

    Re: MSc Pre Registration

I am currently doing a Post grad diploma in Australia at University of Melbourne, so I'd be biased to the Australian way of teaching. Curtin has a good reputation and there is quite a bit of research being done there, and that usually helps in how current the teaching is.

However, there are more things that you should look at when applying as you are just going to have two years of PT training, unlike the rest of us who have 4 years and more of undergraduate training. Do you have an area of interest? Sometimes the school may be leaning towards an area of research and therefore be stronger in one area over another.

The Australians are better in manipulative/musculoskeltal PT, I've found so if that's your interest , then stick with them. They also are good at Clinical Reasoning as they have had primary practionner status since the 1970's so they'll teach you to be an independent thinker as well. The UK is pretty good in Respiratory care and you may get a bit more exposure to wound care. The University of Sydney has some of the leading researchers in one method of stroke care and the UK has researchers in another.

So where do intend to practice finally?

Cost can also be a factor. Where do you live and can you afford to live away form home for prolonged periods of time? Will you need to go home often? Will you need things from home? Will you need scholarships? There are some good websites on studying in Australia, that you should look up as well (if you haven't) to make that final decision.

Just some things to think about.

    Hi

Thanks for the info. i have plenty to thuink about there. I would have a particular interest in musculoskeletal PT and I have lived in Australia already for some time so living that far away from home will not be so trying.

I will definitely look up some of the websites offering info on studying in Oz. If you knoew of any off hand I would appreciate the heads up.

Thanks again for taking time out to answer my call!

    Re: MSc Pre Registration

Oh I forgot to ask - the degree at the uni of Brighton isn't Physiotherapy, but rehab or something- will you then still be qualified as a physio?

    Re: MSc Pre Registration

    Hi all,
I have a place studying Rehabilitation Science MSc at Glasgow Caledonian in January 2010 which will qualify me as a Physio after two years. I was also accepted for RGU for January 2010 and am applying for Queen Margarets in Edinburgh for September 2010. Has anyone done any of these courses?
I am finding it hard to choose between them and as i am taking out a massive professional studies loan I would like to be sure!
