Hi,
I'm a fourth year student studying in Ireland. Currently on my last placement and overall the best advice I can give you is ask, read and read some more!
When I finished 1st year I hadn't been taught all the skills but reading up around what the physio is doing can give you an idea of the theory and this comes in handy later on in college. Also theres a lot of books that in the departments that you wouldn't find in college so see if you can borrow them.
I think the most important piece of advice is ask questions, if you don't understand just ask... Seniors don't expect you to know everything and most like to see the enthusiasm. Might even let you do a bit of hands-on, I got to do chest physio (inc. suctioning) on my 1st shadow placement eventhough we hadn't covered it.
I think this holds true for all your time as a student as you can never know enough...Hope it helps.
