Working in sydney, OZ

Hi there,

My name is Heather and I am looking to head out to Oz later in the year (Sept 2010). By which time I will have completed 2 years of junior rotations in the UK.

I am looking to head to Sydney (my cousin lives here) on a working holiday visa but am a little confused about the next step.

Do I need to get a sponsor? and if so does any one have suggestions about how to contact sponsors?

I have alsp been reading about registering to practice? Does this apply if you are looking for tempory work.

Any help would be much appreciated

As far as i'm aware you can get temporary reg in NSW with the one year visa. a few of the girls from my work have done this when taking a career break. all you need is your course manuscripts from uni and some police clearance etc and your fairlly good to go. from what i understand you need to have a sponsor who will take responsibility for you since you don't have full registration and i think you can only work for 6 month maximum in each place. I know that one of the hospitals in sydney offered my friend a job with 6 months in the public hospital and 6 months in the private sector which was pretty good. I'm in a similar position, hoping to head out in october, so at least you've got some family over there to help you out!are you planning to come back to the uk?are you in a permanent contract at the moment?

Thank you for your post was really helpful and positive in my 1st steps to getting to sdyney!!! I am looking into the temporary registration process and just wondered if you may be able to help?

Did your friends have to find a job 1st in order to fill out the host part of the form? if yes? Do you know where you start this process-e.g. do you contact hospitals directly or are some hospitals known to accept overseas temp workers?

I am looking to go out for a year and am on a permanent contract at the min but am looking to finish my junior rotations in the next 6 months so am taking time out before I come back to specalise.

Any help is much appreciate for this confused sydney hopeful!

hey guys,

My name is Richie and Im an MSK outpatients physio in the UK. Ive been working here a few years with good experience but fancy a change of lifestyle. I am planning to do a years work out there on the temporary visa. I want to work in Sydney but looking at the website it appears new south walse board are stopping the temporary registration after july 1st, if this is true i need to get my skates on?? How do you get sponsorship, recruitment agency or networking. Do you just get you uni documents sorted and police clearence and obviously fill out the forms??

Hi guys,
Currently workin in NSW on temp registration and working/holiday visa.

Reg wasn't too bad to get, basically you complete the form, get all documents notarised including exam transcripts, passports, degree copy. Send in with the processing fee and 8-10 weeks later you'll be notified of eligibility for Temp Reg.

You don't need to have organised a host facility to apply, however you will need this before you can start work, but its just a matter getting them to sign off on the host facility page, and 2-3 days later the Board will send you the Certificate of temp registration.

Regards work, i posted on physiobob (Thanks bob) and was contacted by a recruitment agency. They're really eager to place you (Cuz they get paid) and as a result are relpful re:relocation and all that stuff.

The key is GET STARTED NOW with applying. Don't leave it until your going because i was delayed a few times as they told me they hadn't received my transcripts, 3 weeks later (and 2 job opportunities) they rang saying they were on a desk in the office all along. They're nice in the reg office but have to say pretty disorganised.

At the min I think i am right in saying that NSW have temporarily stopped overseas physios applying for temp visa as after the 1st July I will need to apply to the OZ board which will hopefully enable me to get registration in all states.

Full steam ahead and Oz here we come!!!!

Hi Heatherc,

Now that makes a lot more sense, and it would be great for moving around and getting to see a lot more of the country and getting lots of different experience.

Just one other point a colleague mentioned to me, probably more related to private practice position (long term - not locum) Make sure you negotiate your pay based on experience before you accept a position, apparrently it's expected out here so have plenty of evidence of experience, courses, post-grad qualifications etc.... These are businesses after all.

On looking for work, friends of mine just cold called lotsa department managers in the big hospitals in Sydney with only some success but it's definitely worth a try. Try picking an area you wanna live and looking for work there private/hospital etc... NOT BONDI as practices in this area don't want working/holiday visa physios, and also because there's so much more to sydney than that area.

Good luck with everything, you'll have a ball and get some excellent experience out here. Any other info just message me.

Im on the case for getting sorted now, just go one more rotation to do here in the uk so am looking to be in sydney by septmeber time but i will definately give the hospitals a call.

It sounds like I'm hoping to do pretty much exactly what Heather has in mind as well and have come up against the same obstacle with regards getting temporary registration, so i guess we'l just have to wait for the new board to start operating from July.
My question was, does anyone know how easy it will be to get specifially a musculoskeletal post whilst in Sydney? and is it possible to register with a locum agency now or any other tips on looking for a musculoskeletal post starting in october time.

Overseas physiotherapists can become associate members of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and then you can also look at the locum list positions - http://physiotherapy.asn.au/index.ph...ociate-members

If sufficient overseas physiotherapists join the Australian Physiotherapy Association, the Australian Physiotherapy Council would support the formation of a special group for overseas qualified physiotherapists through the APA.
