Hi all. I am also hoping to do the exam in March '08 as I am finally through the credentialling and PLAR process. (I trained in Australia and also relicensed in California several years ago.) I am now situated in northern Ontario, Canada and currently working part-time as an assistant for the experience and the Canadian contacts.
I have been advised by Canadian therapists to use the O'Sullivan Study Guide and Magee's Orthopedics particularly, along with anything else I find useful in the Alliance list. It seems the Canadian exam may now be closer to the US exam than it was a few years ago. Can anyone who has tried the recent exam speak to that?
I have also found it helpful to make contact with local therapists by looking for opportunities to volunteer or job shadow with them. Some of these therapists are great teachers and I have appreciated their willingness to have me around. I have been out of practice for a few years so this has helped me 'think physio' again in a Canadian clinical context.
An online study group will be a good way of keeping me focused so I am keen to be involved.
Thanks.
linda
Hi all,
Has a group been started? I really need to get studying but due to unfortunate circumstances I have been delayed over the holidays..
If a group hasn't started, want me to look into how to start one?
If so, contact me at: [email protected] and we'll set something up.
Best of luck!
Hi, originally trained in the UK, now living in calgary working as a PTA. Sitting the written exam in Jan 2009 in edmonton.
Looking to join the study group or meet up with local people in the calgary area to help prepare with, especially locally trained canadians.
How does it work? ive never joined an online group study before.
my email address is [email protected] should anyone feel to contact me.
Regards
Luke
also, i see people have recommended the o'sullivan NPTE book as a good exam reference? is this book specific to the american physio exam or the canadian? and if it is the american, is it really worth getting it to study for the canadian???
hello, lukefernandes
I bought the O'sullivan NPTE for my Jan 2008 written exam
This book provides summaries of different aspects of physiotherapy, sample questions + explanations and a CD-ROM with 3 sample tests.
I did feel the summaries are very useful, it is really good for the revision at the night before PCE exam. I tried the sample tests but the are really very difficult to me and thats y I gave up to do them. Haha....
The NPTE question style is different from PCE's. In fact, you can relate the sample questions provided by the Alliance. For PCE, you may be given a scenario and you need to answer some questions related to it. For NPTE( as I see in the O'sullivan book), the questions are not related to each other.
I suggest you to have a look at the sample questions in the orientation resources and try to apply each question to different joints, diseases and practices.
I know that there is a new version of candidate handbook 2009 but I don't know if there is any change to the exam syllabus. BTW, please check every item on the lists because I found some "RARE" questions in the PCE ( which scared my pants off) but they were listed on the EXAMINATION BLUEPRINT!!!
For those questions related to local practice, you can read the " Context of Physiotherapy Practice in Canada" if you went through the PLAR
Magee is good but there are too many tests, just study the common tests for each joint
GOOD LUCK!!
Sanchill
I got the "Context of Physiotherapy Practice in Canada" from the alliance
Beacuse I did not have experience working in Canada before I immigrated , the alliance sent this information to me for self study before I was allowed to register the written exam. It cost ~ $125
"Context of Physiotherapy Practice in Canada" included the following items
Payment of Physical Therapy services
How Physical Therapists are paid
How Canadian Health Care System work
Changes to the Health Care System
Evolution of health care and physiotherapy in Canada
Provincial Health Care systems
History of physiotherapy in Canada
Organization of Physiotherapy Profession in Canada
Physiothrapy Education in Canada
ICIDH/ICF and client-centred care
ethical practice
documentation/ SOAP notes
physiotherapy workload measure
issues related to privacy
it is very useful when you register and work , esp the SOAP notes as I do not use this charting format in Hong Kong
