Do you have to take an exam to work in NZ?

Advertise your physiotherapy job on Physiobob's Job
I am a UK student due to graduate in 6 months and would love to get NZ registration and seek a job in NZ when I qualify!!

I am aware you have to get competencies signed off and pay a fee for registration. However, do you have to take an exam to work in NZ as I will have 0years experience?

I would be very grateful if someone knows the answer and could reply to this thread

    Thank you

Re: Do you have to take an exam to work in NZ?

    Hi,
NZ currently only accepts degrees similar to theirs (4 yr BSc (Hons))for application.
If you graduate with the typical British 3 year degree, this means, that you will need 1 year work experience or further study to be accepted for the application process.

As to the exams: I understand that you will be assessed and you only have to do an exam if you do not meet their criteria in the three core physio areas.

I don't actually know anyone who has ever sat an exam in NZ.

    Regards,
    Fyzzio

As far as I know, there is no exam system for overseas qualified physiotherapists which is also said on their website. One can only get registration by compiling the portfolio for assessments. There are only exams if you want to get registration in Australia.

Re: Do you have to take an exam to work in NZ?

    Hmmm....
This is what I got from their website (FAQ):

Are all applicants required to undertake an examination as part of the application for registration process?
There are no mandatory examinations set by the Board. However, in certain instances where evidence of competence has not been adequately demonstrated in written documentation an applicant may be invited to undertake competence examinations at their own expense in New Zealand to enable them to demonstrate their competence in the clinical setting.
