    Re: Job Situation....getting any better?

    hi there,
i am looking for some realistic advice.
i am lucky enough to have a full time permenant job in the NHS but am currently working on my NZ regristration. i would like to work abroad and have been to NZ to travel before so thats one of the reasons i am wanting to go. HOWEVER i am very concerened as to lack of jobs and really dont want to give up my job here to go into the unknown.

is the job situ that bad? is it likely to change? i am not looking for anyone to tell me what to do but looking for some advice on my situation from those who are in the same situ or who have been there before or even who havent got a job.

i have read the post above and they give me the impression that i am lucky to have a job and should just stay until the situation improves if it ever will.

    any advice will be appreciated
    from cofused!!!

    Re: Job Situation....getting any better?

    Hi,
I would try to get NZ registration (if you have the Scottish BSc and it is recent, then you shouldn't have a problem with that), then a work permit, then apply for a job and not leave prior to having a job secured.

I am in NZ and have got a job. Thankfully.
The rest - well, I have made my comments, as you have read.

    Regards,
    Andrea

    Re: Job Situation....getting any better?

    Hi Gillon,

I too have a permanent NHS job but what I have managed to get is a career break. This way I am not giving up my job, it will still be there in 14months (but I can extend it to 2 years). I guess it depends on your employer whether you can get this or not.

From my understanding you cant get a NZ work permit without a job offer, therefore I am travelling over on a working holiday visa and will apply for the work permit once I have a job offer. This is the way my friend did it. My friend went out at the start on this year and it took her 4 months to get a physio job. she just worked in outdoor shop until she found one.

I guess its the same as in the UK, just dont give up and eventually something will come up. Im just gonna keep trying!

    Re: Job Situation....getting any better?

thanks for your replies i appreciate it.
i will keep going with the application but it seems to be taking ages to put together!! need to find more motivation!
i have previously had a career break from my current employer to travel for a year so doubt if they will be in a hurry to give me another especially with the current job climate! i have a no chance basically and have been told that.

thats why i am in a quandray.
again i appreciate your advice and will apply for regristration then a job and wont leave till i get one. think thats the best plan.

    thanks again
    very mush appreciated

    Re: Job Situation....getting any better?

I too have been keeping an eye on the static job situation in NZ. I headed out to Oz in November awaiting my registration outcome. I just got an email yesterday to say it had been granted so once i have my APC certificate then i'll apply for registration here. i had a permanent post in the NHS but the job situation was not allowing for any career progression, hence the reason i've come over to this side of he hemisphere!I am currently working in a motel in NT until things have been sorted doing a bit of travelling on the way. Its the risk you take leaving your safe job back home but thats going nowhere. We were told career breaks were off the radar now because of the finacial climate so i wasn't prepared to wait. I would like to work here for a year or so since there are jobs then head over to NZ if things improve or i have a job offer. The registration was tough getting the motivation to do it, but once it went away there were only a few glitches like not having filled out the most up to date application form so i had to do it again, and get it certified by the lawyer etc as well as my references. however since they sent a letter to say that they had all the information it only took 3 weeks! so needless to say i am quite chuffed now. most people in my wok thought that i was crazy to leave without a job but again i'm willing to take that risk.

    Re: Job Situation....getting any better?

hi laura, congrats on the APC. i am still a million miles away or thats how i feel!
i was lucky enough to get a sabattical from my NHS job in 2007 and returned a year later. now back in the job for 2 years it is clear career progression is minimal with 2 managers above me. i did travel to both oz and NZ and travelled for a number of months so this is the attraction of coming back and working there as a physio. it just seems such a lot of work to do esp with the lack of jobs. but your def right you wont know until you try so will get my head down and get going again. thanks and let me know how you get on.

    cheers

    gillon
