Canadian physiotherapist (M.Sc. PT) looking to work in Arizona

I'm new to the forum. I am a Canadian citizen, educated (M.Sc. PT) and working as physiotherapist in Canada. I would like to work in Arizona, and was hoping someone could provide some guidance, I don't want to re-invent the wheel. Thanks

I am also a Canadian Physiotherapist (MScPT) working in Toronto. I have started the process for working in the US already, it's been a long road, but I'm almost done. The length of the process depends on the University you went to.

I believe if you went to the following schools you are exempt from the FCCPT having to evaluate your entire education. You can basically apply and write the board exams.
    -University of Toronto
    -University of Western Ontario.

Msg me if you want more details

Hi! I must decide between U of Alberta and U of Toronto MSc. PT programs. Is it very difficult to obtain equivalency evaluation if one does not graduate from U of T or Western? What school did you go to and what was the process like for you? Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated!!

PS. I would like to work in the state of Arizona, Texas, California, Hawaii, or Florida but I am not a USA citizen

Re: Canadian physiotherapist (M.Sc. PT) looking to work in Arizona

Dear MartadiPT, I recently tried to register in Hawaii, but found it easier on the mainland. For Hawaii, they ask if you have a valid work permit,
which I don't have. The state I did register in did not ask that. I just want to volunteer at times on the island, so there is no way I'm going
to apply for a work permit for that!
I am a Canadian and a graduate of U of Alberta. I own a clinic a short walk from U of A. The truth is, that the average you must have to get in
this year exceeds 3.9 it seems. The program is a victim of it's own popularity.S
o I would suggest you plan on U of Toronto.

Re: Canadian physiotherapist (M.Sc. PT) looking to work in Arizona

    Hi all,

I am also looking to apply to work in the US and interested in Hawaii, what sort of work permit is required? How do you obtain it? Do you first need to register as a PT in a state?

    Any info much appreciated.

Re: Canadian physiotherapist (M.Sc. PT) looking to work in Arizona

    Dear Manchester,

The work permit my Canadian friend used to work in Hawaii was the one allowed by the "free trade agreement". That is an agreement between Canada and USA. You would need a job offer, and Canadian citizenship.
I could suggest some places in Hawaii that would need you enough to give you a job offer.
However, you need a liscense to practice in the USA. I think that is the bigger hurdle for us Canadians.
    By far.

Re: Canadian physiotherapist (M.Sc. PT) looking to work in Arizona

Hi, I am an indian physio; living in canada.. I have done my B.P.T from RGUHS.I have few queries hope i get answers:

    1. I want to take NPTE exam as soon as possible. I have heard that NY state has min requirement so it will take less time. And for NY there is diff process called new york verification: so my que is, do i have to do type 1 verification as well to take NPTE?Or just new york verification is enough?

    2. I live in canada and also have tourist visa of US valid for 10 yrs; but i have heard that i can appear for NPTE from canada as well. Is this true? And if true; do i need type 1?

    3. If i want to work in US as a physio; do i have to have health care worker certificate? Or do type 1? Or just new york verification is enough for NPTE exam and to work as well?

    4. I already had taken TOEFL twice for canadian physiotherapy licensure exam, and have scores valid till Nov and Dec 2015. So was thinking that if at all i need to take toefl again for NPTE or Type 1, i better use that score before it expires.*
    My toefl scores:
    Nov 2013 exam- R20, L20, S26, W25 = total 91
    Dec 2013 exam- R27, L27, S23, W24 = total 101
    is this valid score?

Hope to hear soon from someone...

    thanks.
