Hi Mike
There is no inflammatory reaction, hence the NSAIDS will do zip. You don't need strength, but need eccentric training.
Find out the cause and deal with that - the symptoms will follow. You don't need gizmo's and gadget's....yet

to even hazard a guess at this problem more information is needed,
1. a history of the problem from when it first presented, any other and/or previous problems.
2. what sports/activities you participate in,
3. activities that aggravate it, activiies that ease it,
4. postural issues, range of motion, strength and other ortho testing
I would suggest a second opinion from another physio or perhaps a sports physician,
try rest and icing it down when it becomes a problem.
all the best.

I agree with the other 2 replies on all points.
If theMRI was negative there is most likely another differential diagnosis (there are many many causes of pain at the front of the knee). You need further assessment through thorough history taking and an examination.
Who requested your MRI? Have you been back to see them and had your follow-up appointment?
Good luck.
