    Acupuncture

    Taping
    Hi all

Quick question abuot acture low back pain

When your patient attends your clinic with acute low back pain, 1 day ago, and an assessment leans towards disc inury, I am always hesitant in doing too much hands on as it is so acute.

However on palapation of specific acupuncture points in the leg particulary GB31, SP6, and KI3, i noticed they are more tender on the side where the pain is.

Is it OK to needle these points to provide pain relief and kick start the healing process or will it cause greater inflammatory response in the back?

    Cheers

    Re: Acupuncture

    Hi John
In my experience, both GB31 and Sp6 are often tender on palpation anyway, and unlikely to be related to disc pathology. Needling these points is likely to be OK, but why not
try some paraspinal points too. Don't forget trigger points in the QL, especially below the end of the 12th rib, about 3.5c lateral to the midline

    Thanks for the reply
I am hesitant to needle paraspinal and QL in the very acute stage, as these muscle spasms may be supporting the disc. I will defintely give them a go after 5/7 and then tape the back for support.
