Which NICE guideline would you change to reverse the trend?

    Taping
I would if I may pose the question to Senior and perhaps retired Physiotherapist who experienced the profession in the late 70's and 80's, in the light of Research showing a rise since 1992- 2006 of 161% in the prevalence of Low Back Pain, despite all the health & safety and lifting and handling. Which was the baby thrown out with the bath water, as it were?, which NICE Guideline would you change? If my memory serves me right 1992 was when Hospital Managers came in and Matron went out.

Re: Which NICE guideline would you change to reverse the trend?

I would argue your stats (or someone's stats are not correct or cannot be compared). As over 80% of the normal working age population report some form of back pain during their lives it would be impossible to have such a large increase.

What we do know, although it is carefully kept out of the research, is that manual handling has NOT altered the prevalence of occupational low back pain. It is a normal phenomenon, reported by most people and is independent of the type of job you do. In the main the abnormal people are those who have never had back pain. One might look at them for more answers.
