    Physiotherapy during pregnancy?

    Taping
Hi!! I知 happy to announce that we are expecting our first child.
I just wonder if anyone here has seen a physiotherapist during pregnancy time. I知 suffering from low back pain but I知 able to tolerate now. I don稚 want to get it worse.
The sciatica nerve in my back is killing me. Is it common to have such pain during pregnancy time? I heard it痴 a good idea to start gentle physiotherapy exercises while pregnant, so I have scheduled an appointment with a physiotherapist in Mississauga for next week. Has anyone here undergone physiotherapy treatment during pregnancy? Will this treatment help the labor to be easier? Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks!!

I am not a health specialist, but I think it would be better to undergo the treatment after your delivery.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!!

Of course you can visit a Physio while you are pregnant.
Pregnancy rather often causes back pains and especially Physios specialising in Women's Health can do an assessment and recommend treatment options. These range from exercises over Electrotherapy (TENS) to support belts etc..
Not sure about the health system in Canada, but usually your pregnancy care provider (? GP, ? Obstetrician, ? Midwife) should be able to recommend a specialised Physiotherapist.

    Good luck,
    Fyzzio

    Thank you Fyzzio!!
I have been to the physiotherapist and started the prenatal health programs which include postural and back exercises, breathing exercises, weight management, etc. So far I'm not experiencing any issues.

    Re: Physiotherapy during pregnancy?

    Hey Brenda!

Pregnant women are very susceptible to musculoskeletal pain, especially the development of lower back pain. The mechanism of the development pelvic and lower back pain often relates to a combination of factors, including a chance in the centre of gravity upwards and forwards which is associated with forward tilting of the pelvis. This causes an increase in lumbar lordosis, and loosening of ligaments associated with increased levels of the hormone “relaxin”. Lower back pain can be reduced during pregnancy by paying careful attention to posture and avoid sudden movements through advice, exercise and of course Physical Therapy!

    Take Care and Congrats
