    Shoulder impingement and weights

    Taping
I've had a physio diagnosis me with shoulder impingement. My question is, if I do dumbbell presses lying on the floor, and doing lighter weights 15-30 reps will I be aggravating the impingement?

Does it hurt when you do your presses on the floor? Your question is very hard to answer safely without all the information - why don't you ring your physio and ask?

This is a complex situation and talking about dumbbell press depends on how you perform it. Usually the issue with impingement is an over developed anterior site of the chest and anterior deltoids etc combined with poor thoracic extension. One might well ask why you are currently doing dumbbell press? This would not be an exercise recommended during the injury management. Correction of the technique balanced with appropriate balancing exercises, especially for your external rotators (esp. eccentric work) would progress together. This is a little hard to explain on a forum.

Much better put than my reply! There are so many factors involved, for us to give you a simple reply on a forum may put you in danger of further injury - which wouldn't really be responsible of us.

Looks like you've answered my question. I'm not currently doing any presses. Doing dumbbell presses even with light weight is not recommended if suffering from impingement. Thanks

    Re: Shoulder impingement and weights

one more question. How long (roughly) does it take for "minor" shoulder impingement to "heal?"

    Re: Shoulder impingement and weights

I have had some people get better within a week and others that went on to need decompression surgery - it really all depends.

In general though, you would expect to see improvement after 3-6 weeks of doing the correct exercises correctly and getting appropriate manual therapy.

I personally do not like electrotherapy machine treatments (interferential, Ultrasound, TENS, etc) for shoulder problems...one day, i might be proven wrong however as it stands, i believe you can better without it.
