    Question Idea, any feedback

    Hi,

I've several family and friends that have been through joint recovery, surgery or replacement. They found recovery a tough process and are 'mostly' good now. But this got me thinking (I'm an entrepreneur), are there better ways to support people recovering from joint issues? PT is great, but alas from my experience patients often seem to forget or forgo some of the exercises, icing, leg raising between visits. Although it is often hard to tell whether they are doing too much (running too early) or not enough (coach potato). Would it be useful for the PT community to have a sensor that could track what exercise/compliance patients have been doing between visits so they can steer them on to the right path?

I'd love to hear any thoughts you might have.

    Dammad

PS: I tried to find the right group, but this seemed best. Sorry if you see otherwise.

    Hi,
I think we need to completely step away from controlling patient's compliance.
It's far more our job to educate and motivate them sufficiently enough so they are the true leaders in their own rehabilitation.
If you are really interested in creating an app to help patients - you should ask the patients.

    Good luck,
    Fyzzio

Well, it's just an idea at this point. But I think I could make a sensor that would fit on/around a joint that can monitor its motion and be easy to wear. Given this, I believe this would allow it to track (continuously) the motion of the joint to know the ROM, gait speed, TUG, etc. as well as compliance. I would have thought that this would be great feedback and data for PTs to understand how recovery is going between visits. Saves time (data available already) and helps understand more on what's going on (do they limp or have limited ROM after short distance walks, etc.)

I agree with you. The patients I've asked have been very positive on the idea. They want to know feedback on how they are doing between PT and get feedback if they doing things right. Humans are naturally lazy so reminders on compliance and exercise are also considered useful. So my thought was would PTs also find it useful.
