Hi
Let me introduce myself, I am Vijay Sharma, and have just completed my B.P.T final year.
Being physiotherapists we all know the status of Physiotherapy in India. Today, despite of our extensive knowledge of subjects ,we are prevented from attaining the status we deserve among the medical professionals.
Who can be held responsible for this?
Government? For its policies and depriving us of our council?
Most of will answer yes. Actually its WE-the upcoming Physiotherapists who haven’t taken any initiative till date in this direction. Just blaming others and waiting for the initiating steps to follow can never provide us with a solution.
IT’S OUR RIGHT TO HAVE A COUNCIL.
Even nurses have a council, then why do we lack?
Our country needs us in same way as it needs any MBBS or MD. Government needs to recognize it.
I accept that physiotherapy evolved as diploma courses in India and may be at that time Physiotherapy Association was sufficient as an administrative body. But status of Physiotherapy has improved a lot since the bachelors and masters degree programs have been introduced in India in this field.
So,it’s right time to ask for council so that WE-the upcoming Physiotherapists and our juniors can enjoy the status of respectable medical professionals.
Another major drawback that we are facing is the lack of job in government institutions and moreover the salary scales in government jobs need to be revised as these are still according to DPT qualifications.
Also, our profession is considered as referred system of practice in India owing to lack of legal umbrella that is the PHYSIOTHERAPY COUNCIL OF INDIA.
So, its high times that we all should acknowledge the need for physiotherapy council and put in our best efforts in the way towards enlightenment in same context.
All those awakened are invited to join the group, so that we all can collectively make fruitful efforts in the process of physiotherapy council.

Kindly appreciate the initiative and forward this to all physiotherapists so that we can make it a national issue.
THANKS

Hi all!
Having done my undergrad from India I completely agree that we DO need a regulatory body for the physios in India!
I did face initial hurdles during my postgrad overseas and hence the following suggestions:
1)IT IS A MUST that we get the undergrad course standardised thru'out India. We surely need to get the curriculum looked into!
2)ALSO we need to have a COMPULSORY junior rotatory physio posting for 2 yrs. after graduation before we can step into the specialised field (eg. Senior post), something in line with the UK hierarchy system. This would give a newly qualified physio every opportunity to explore all the major fields in physio before they could choose 'one' to specialise their practice in. This wud enable them to get a complete outlook/picture and have a better understanding of a 'condition' which sometimes can go unnoticed as a differential diagnosis. Afterall, all systems in the body are interconnected!
I appreciate your initiative; kindly let me know how I can contribute.
Regards
Hello all
Hi I too graduated in India and am currently working in the UK.
I did my BPT in Mangalore which is one of the citys in India with a huge physio population...
I can certainly understand the plight of the newly qualified physios and i have been through the same tantrum......My freinds and myself have spent hours discussing about this issues and the possible solutions to it.
This was 3 years ago
Now after I came to Uk and worked here....I certainly feel so sure that we are deprived of a lot of things in India......
I am positive about the curriculum but i have concerns about the scope of practise and the amount of clinical exposure we are entitled. I also have concerns regarding practise standards in India....the lack of research and resourses...... and the need for a continous CPD.
I am glad that we have a lot of physios doing their master degrees in India but again when you compare the amount of curriculum covered and the extent of research done...the Indian masters needs to improve.
I completly agree the need of a council and/or a regulatory body whichcan set standards of practise for all the physios....but its all about implementation of such plans
The Indian Association of physiotherapists are trying their best to get this matter sorted out but there is a lot of manipulations at higher levels.....
So as a member of IAP...i feel that if we have very able and sincere leaders we can get ourself a good solution to this problem...The government will respond to statistics....We need to document the effect of physiotherapy and its use in the current medical profession...We should prove that physiotherapy can reduce hospital stay and save millions for the public.....but will the private sector approve of this huge "saving" plan.
And with corruption running so high the chances of government approving more physiotherapy vacancies......LOW.
In UK there is a National Health Service which funds the Hospitals and medical treatment is free to the public. So it is a need for the government to save money and so all AHP's enjoy a good job standing.... Will this situation happen in INDIA?......Will India have resourses so as to freely treat 100 billion people.....I dont think so that this will happen in the near future.
Physios in India are so desparate to get a job that they work for free in many hospitals.......This is again so demoralising to our profession...but neverthe less...something is better than nothing....We cannot blame them as it is very essential to gain that experience....
Salaries in india .......again the problems lie in the basic infrastructure........In the UK if the physio manage to prevent the patient meeting a consultant....the government saves 200 pounds..and if the physio manages to do that for 5 patients a day...he saves the govt 1000 pounds a day...and 30000 pounds a month ...which is the ANNUAL income for a physio in UK
In india if the patients gets discharged fast the hospital does not make a profit........so why should a physio facilitate discharge?....our profession is therefore used as an adjunct....and the management is really interested in the pain releiving...and short exercise spells....but not the rehabilitation.....
So dear friends...I can go on...but whats the point......I certainly feel that even if a council comes....with the current saturation level in our profession....there wont be much of a difference.....
We need brilliant institutions, brilliant mentors and we need to be highly specialised. We have to gain those skills and pass it on to the next generation...also we must emphasis on research and self development......All this will make us good clinicians and good professionals....then just keep ur fingers crossed.....maybe things will change......But if u cant change the system...then dont flow along with it....get out of it and search for greener pastures....It will be tough......but there is a saying
WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH...THE TOUGH GETS GOING
cheers everyone

Hi Mr.Sharma,
Thank you for the topic and realisations of we being ignored. But to be frank-Govt of India, min of social justice and empowerment included Physiotherapist in the Rehabilitation council of India(RCI) with constitutional bill approved by the President. It was in 1999.
But to the sad part of it, some private associations oposed it and gone to court for stay! The govt was quick to respond-PT category being deleted with another bill immediately.
So now whom you feel to blame.I was one of the person to keep writing to Govt of India and RCI for long. But due to some persons personal loss of chair(?) we lost all.
zNow it will take another 50 year till thse old people die and new generation takes care of you like people.
Regards.

Hi vijay and friends,
My name is siva Prasad,I am in USA know, I feel happy that some of you have the same feeling which I have and good to know that. I am in India job less for 2 years from 2002 -2004, I got a job in 2005 that to on recommendation, I worked there for a salary of 2000/month. I passed out from Rajiv Gandhi University with 74% .most of my classmate’s r out of country. Even though I have money here I don’t have a good feeling in me as I am serving the wrong people instead of serving the people of my country, all this is because we don’t have any jobs in India and as u said there is no council to regulate the things. So we need to do some thing that the next generation of physios will be benefited. I feel that this is not a one day job and one man show every one should be the part of this.
Tell me how I can contribute for achieving this goal,
My e-mail ID is [email protected]
Take care,
shiva
hi siva,
i totally agree with u that it is not a one man show and neither it can happen in a day,we all have too put our effort for our future.m just trying to bring together all those physioz who have fire in them to do something about this problem, those who really whant to do something and not just blameing others, those who whant to change the system.
so at this time we what more and more physioz to join group.
thanks shiva for reply
hi vijay,
great initiative by u.
v all need 2 fight 4 the council.
i'm joinin the group, where v can discuss many things.
our 1st motive shd be 2 stop the DPT's dominating the proceedings of the association.
regards
ark.
yeh hui na baat, physioz with great ideas r joining group.thanks to all.
hi mr. sharma,
sorry not for repling for few days. so uptill now what is being done and what is to be done.
any instructions for me
if needed i have a association of more than 200 physios. for any random attempt we are ready. if you need us for this great cause. reply we are waiting
hi swapnil,
till now m tring to collect those physioz who r ready to do something.we need a large gathering,i hope i we will get support of all member of ur association,u tell them about the group, those who r interested can join group, this will help us to seprate them from those who r not interested.
one more important thing,we have to see how many physioz each member can bring with him if we do something like last year in delhi.
so for now we have to increase ou strenght by increase in number.
mr. sharma,
ill love to help to out where you need me.
about my physio team dont worry.at a time at least 200 physios will always be ready to do any think at any time you instruct
thanks handaji.
i hope ur team members r from allover country.
this will help us more.
To achieve your goal you need to show continues demonstration. You can consider the following points for concentrating protest:
• At first Clear the difference between Diploma and BSc degree. The person who has a Diploma degree will work as a assistant of a physiotherapist. It’s not very difficult to understand.
• Make a provisional committee and its function would be building good communication (by letter, e-mail, phone call) with physios across India and gathering & shorting out their opinion.
• Arrange a discussion seminar in which everybody should be invited if possible cause if don’t invite as much as possible they will get the chance of blaming you later. This could ruin your efforts. At that meeting ,you will fabricate a ACTING COMMITTEE by the votes of attending physios .This committee will take further action like creating public awareness about the its importance (by means of both printing .& electronic media), how physiotherapy can improve their wellbeing and lower their cost etc. They will arrange seminar symposium procession .
• Most important thing is to convince Lawmakers.
• Decide who the enemies of physiotherapy are and what their interests are.
Stick together and bring the good days of physiotherapy in the subcontinent. Best luck.
MOSHIUR RAHMAN
(A physio from Bangladesh)
Dear mr. Vijay
A hearty appriciation of your effort to raise voice for the council.
I'm a Physio presently in uk. Was working in india as lecturer for 4 years.
I too share similar feeling that of other folks in the sceen. As everybody must agree that it will not be a one day affair and one man show
I suggest a strategies to move forward.
1. Gather the support to create a political force of sufficient number.
2. Try to bring in the notice of the all the political person known to each and every member. the sitting MLAs and MPs of the sitting government of the your region should be the first target.
3. A regional commitee can be a more organised approch to start with, as a representative can arrange a meeting to the local MPs and MLAs and draw their attention to the problem.
4. the area of empasis should be that the harm that public and society at a large may have if the council is not grated which can regulate the proffessionals behavior rather then emphasing at the need of we as a proffessionals.
This recommandations are open for debat and suggestions are wellcome.
any personal comment and clarification can be directed at [email protected]
Hello everyone....
Good responses but we need an action plan......just by typing in our support does not mean a penny.....so sharma....what r our objectives.....let all of us list out our need and possible suggestions....
Then we need to draft a letter and sent it to the Health dept of the central govt.....Letter to the Health minister and a bill must be approved and passed at the parliament
Then comes the implementation bit
But first and foremost set out regular rules and guidelines ....
When we demand a council......We are all expecting that someone will sit and set up a council.....
Thats wont happen.....we should research the trends of council settings in other countries, We should get as many members of IAP and other organisations sign a memorandum declaring the need and then we can correspond to The WCPT and WHO about our need....this should be the preliminary plan.....
With the Back up of WHO and WCPT...we have a strong point to make before the ministry of health in INDIA.........
We need to be organised.....
So we must form associations at home and overseas.....I am in the process of building an association of Indian physiotherapists in The UK.(AIPU)...SIMILAR ORGANISATIONS CAN HELP IN FUNDING OUR ASSOCIATION FOR THE CAUSE.
INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF GRADUATE PHYSIOTHERAPISTS is another organisation with similar goals..we can liase with them or rather organise a meet with them.....Currently they are an active group.....we should be looking to formulate a safe plan so that all of us, dpt, bpt or mpt...should survive and enjoy good status...thus maintaining physiotherapy a reputable and respectable profession
