    Brief Medical History Overview

    walking on ankle

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hiya

Broke right ankle 9wks ago now. I am still walking with 2 crutches but round the house only Ive tried to walk properly. I cant walk and bend my foot to walk normally, I am walking with a very very painful limp and to one side with foot going outwards. Consultant wants me to get full weight bearing and so do I (need to get back to work) but am I pushing things to far? Consultant is referring me to a different dr to manage the pain issue (dont know who or what he actually does) I was also wondering if I am out of order to ask if a cortisone injection would help.....what do you think?

Consultant wants me to use a hydropool but our hospital doesnt have one.
i am having physio every week and doing the exercised given.

I just dont want treatment to go backwards...........

    Thanks

    Lightbulb Re: walking on ankle

Have you considered using your local swimming baths, the buoyancy of the water will aid in getting the feel for the normal gait (walking) this may help address pain issues although not the full weight bearing as the buoyant properties aid floatation.

    hope this helps...

    Re: walking on ankle

    Hi,

Yes I am going swimming already. It helps at the time but hurts afterwards. I know its going to take time but the pain can be quite sharp and the foot/ankle is really tender to touch. I use the band everyday but struggle pulling to the right and upwards.

What sort of timescale is normally expected for a broken ankle? only bit I can remember is its a webber B displaced fracture of the fibia. There was something else in there but cant remember what is was lol.......lateral Malleulos something????????????

    Re: walking on ankle

Hey timescales can depend on if surgical intervention was needed and severity of injury etc... By swimming baths i was meaning walking rather than swimming to get used to the normal movement of putting your foot down...

You could try things such as roling a tennis ball underneath your foot, do you have movement in your toes...we use things like picking up objects with your feet like a marble or keys etc...to get range of movement going.

I would advise partial weight bearing before attempting full weight bearing like just using one crutch see how you get on x

    Re: walking on ankle

    Aircast Airselect Short Boot
    Thanks

Would you recommend any kind of support on the ankle whilst walking? At the moment I havent got anything on it at all. I know its still got to be free for movement but surely its going to need to some kind of support to help strengthen it or am I wrong.

I can move my toes and i keep trying to pick up a pillowcase. I get so far and then the pain is awful, right through my foot to ankle but not always to the area I broke it, it tends to be the other side (left)
