I have just had my cast removed after fracturing my cuboid. I was in cast for 6 weeks.I'm a bit concerned that I was just sent home with no advice whatsoever! My whole leg is very weak with no muscle left and I can just about manage to hobble about with one crutch. My foot is very stiff and painful. Am I supposed to be walking on it yet (the cast came off on Tuesday) Am I supposed to be doing specific exercises? I'm beginning to think I'll never be able to walk again

Hi poppy67
I presume the # happened 6 weeks ago then and there was no surgical intervention?
If so nothing to worry about! Personally I would stick with two crutches and get a normal as possible walking pattern. It is quite early to start cutting down to one crutch. Of course you may have been told different information on this - but at this stage the fracture should have united but there is still considerable healing to go on. so the fracture site its self will be sore on weight bearing and eased if you use two crutches.
The foot is an intricate piece of machinery and while a cast is important to get the fracture to heal, immobilising the foot like that is very bad for the rest of the foot. There are lots of things a physio can do to improve matters - like getting rid of the stiffness in the multitude of other foot joints and specific exercises for building up strength in the various muscles and also a fitness plan that doesn't involve lots of walking as you can't walking very far. For example, if you like the water then supervised exercising in a heated pool is great for the foot and for the morale.
So you will survive without physio but you may be much better off with it.
