    Brief Medical History Overview

    Wrist pain for 2 years

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
2 years ago I started to experience pain in my left wrist after a martial arts session, since then I've been experiencing pain in the wrist from certain movements.
I had a ganglion cyst aspirated last year and 2 months ago when it came back I had it surgically removed. The scar has now healed but it is still very painful when I put any kind of weight on my palm. I can bend the wrist about 75 degrees both ways without pain but as soon as weight is placed on the palm it becomes painful. There is sometimes popping and craclking noises when I move my hand and also in the elbow. The elbow is not painful but the popping is slightly uncomfortable. After an arthroscopy examination I was told I had generalized ligament laxity in the wrist and instability between the scaphoid and the lunate. The specialist told me this was no cause for concern and didn't really say much about what was causing the pain. According to him there is no reason for there to be any pain and he wants to give me a cortisone shot. I don't want to go through with the shot because as far as I understand it will not tackle the cause of the pain.
Does anybody have any idea what might be causing the pain or what type of therapist I should see about this? Other than the ligament laxity the arthroscopy showed nothing.

    thanks

Re: Wrist pain for 2 years

A cortisone treatment does sound a bit of a shot in the dark. If the surgeon can justify what the problem is and why the cortisone injection should help (ie localised inflammation) then all well and fine.

Two things come to mind: You could have some adhesions (scarring) from the surgery that could be limiting the full range of extension at the wrist/hand. A manipulative physiotherapist may be able to help you with this.

If it is due to ligamentous laxity then exercises to strengthen the muscles of the wrist and hand may be the best option. This takes a long time to get a result (several months) however. The theory is that by strengthenting the wriist and hand in the not only do the muscles get stronger but the ligamentous and tendinous tissue also build up and hopefully tighten things up.
