    Brief Medical History Overview

    Age: 24, Male, Presenting Problem Since: two months, Symptom Behaviour: constant, Investigations: awaiting results of scan. 8th march

    keen footballer, ACL injury options.

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    hey.

    I was an active footballer and played up to 3 times a week, a few months ago i tore my acl. Im not too sure how bad it is yet as iv not had the scan results back.

    I was told at my first appointment that I would either have to get re constructive surgery or possibly just rehab. I live in the UK so I will be treated by the NHS.

    It seems that recently, in the majority of cases the knee specialist will recommend the rehab as opposed to the surgery.

    After doing some research im quite alarmed, it seems that having rehab and then going on to play football 3 times a week is a huge gamble and your acl will eventually give out. My knee actually feels pretty stable atm, but im not sure it would be able to withstand the rigours of football even after rehab. Im pretty sure if I want to keep playing football that ill have to get the surgery?

    interested to hear if anyone has gone on to playing football after just the rehab, and how successful this was for them? or even after the surgery ?

    Just to be clear that its soccer im playing if any of our friends from across the pond are reading.

    You'll likely be able to return to football either way, however, I suggest you check out the West 4th physiotherapy blog for recent info re ACL injuries and arthritis. Also, you are very likely to go on to meniscal tear without surgical repair. Marj

    You will need to keep in mind that rehab means intense rehab 30min+ per day up to 6 days per week to maintain the stability needed in the knee to be able to perform at a high level in football. Athletes can return to sport without significant repairs so long as their rehab is up to par. If you are not willing to make the rehab commitment, then yes, perhaps the surgery would suffice. However, either route will result in surgery. The knee will probably require further support during play with a knee brace to prevent buckling etc.

    good advice from all. one question is what level of football do you play, competitive, social etc, do you train etc. are you goalkeeper or outfield player? acl surgery and rehab is also big committment 9-12 mths, minor risk from surgery, some time of work etc so weigh up against conservative. dependent on your level you can do without acl but i agree with comments below. maybe give conservative rehab a go, return to football and see how it feels. if no good not wasted as pre-hab is always good before surgery. even after acl repair you can still go on to meniscal tears, as is possible when you did your acl in first instance the mensicus was damaged.
    strength, co-ordination, proprioception (balance) and control (+/- brace) key to good knee function - get with a good rehab physio and see where you end up.
