knee pain that starts at the back of the knee and moves forward to just below teh kneecap, no trauma, any ideas?

Any visible swelling? Any issue with bleeding disorders? Just thinking of fluid in the joint.
How are the muscles surrounding the knee? It's amazing what tight hams, quads, and calves can do to a knee.
Any issue with the popliteus? Pressure on the bursae at the popliteal fossa can cause issues.
No trauma, but wear and tear? Pain on palpation on the joint line?
Ligament and meniscus tests?
What about ankles? Ankle instability can cause knee problems.
Activities? Is this person say a soccer player who is always in precarious knee positions? Watch whether the knee drops in with movement.

He has played alot fo sports, typically football/soccer in his life
I havne't assessed him thoroughily yet but will look at it again later.
I just foudn the description "pain startign at the back and moving to th efront of the knee to under the patella "as an odd description, could a tight/damaged popliteus can compressed teh fluid with in the knee, leading ot the sensation of the knee jount feeling tight?
He has no significant injury history jsut a few minor issues over the years.
Its painful also if in a sittign position he bangs his leg against the ground (sorry that's a very odd description)
I will look at his ankle. have you noticed in teh past that strenghtening the ankle joint has been effective at curing knee issues?
