Knee (ligament or tendon) problem please help

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
This has been bothering me for quite awhile now and i have searched everywhere for a solution, i would really appreciate any help. The problem im having is that a ligament, (or tendon i dont know which one it is), in my left knee, moves or slides out of place every time my knee bends below 90degrees. Specifically the part thats moving is the first ligament or tendon you feel when u grab the outside of your hamstring (near the knee), when the knee is bent.(so for example if u grab the left side of ur left legs hamstring near the knee part u will feel the ligament or tendon that im talking about). To be clear, there is absolutely no pain and it is not a result of injury.
Just to provide sum background info, about 4 years ago, i had swelling in the same knee for a bit over a year. I was referred to a specialist and was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. I went on naproxen for about a year and when i came off it the swelling didnt come back. So my prediction is that its a complication of the prolonged inflammation.

Please ask for any extra info if needed, i will really appreciate any help. I am ready to do anything to fix this.

Pajiko it sounds like it could be your iliotibial band. If it is then it may respond well to stretching and massage. There are lots of good physiotherapists in your community area. I suggest you book in for an assessment and advice. It should not require more than a few visits to assess and advise you what to do.

Hi marj, thank you for the reply. I just wanted to do everything i can before spending money on a physio. I did some research on the illiotibial band and learned some knee anatomy. It seems that its actually the bicep femoris tendon(not 100% sure tho). In addition, i found that if i bend my knee with an externally rotated foot then the slipping/sliding of the tendon doesnt occur. And vice versa, if i bend my knee with a more internally rotated foot, the slipping becomes even more accentuated. Anything i can do before seeing a physio? Any strengthening or stretching?

Hi Pajiko. If you think it is your hamstrings tendon, you could try stretching your hamstrings. It could also be your superior tibiofibular joint.

Hey pajiko, Well considering ur complains it seems you gotta a problem in your tibio fibular joint. as you said, externally rotated foot doesnt cause a slip and an internally rotated foot does, it means that it is your tibilfibular joint actually that is subluxating and repositioning. Also the biceps femoris muscle of the hamstring muscle is inserted on the tibiofibular joint after inserting on the lateral condyle of the posterolateral part of femur. So it does suggest that sliping of the tendon is due to actually moving of the tibiofibular joint. I advise you to go to a physio and ask for taping your tibiofibualar joint in a position when ur foot is in external rotation. also go for Ankle strengthening as superior tib-fib joint is directly linked with inferior tib-fib joint and in future may cause weakness in ur ligaments and muscles of ur ankle making ur ankle prone for injuries.
