Is there any different to using a stationary exercise upright or recumbent bike as regards stress on knee joints?

    Re: Arthritis in Knees

In my experience the upright bike places more load through the patella whereas the recumbent bike allow more hip and gluteal involvement for an equivalent level of resistance.

It depends on which stress you are talking about.

If it is in regard to degenerating knee joint (a narrowing of the inside edge) then cycling is a great choice.
However, upright "in saddle seating" would be preferable but cycling shoes should be worn at all time to passively limit valgus or varies stress. Something knee pain suffers have 90% of time.

Recumbent can allow the knee to drop away each side when fatigued.

Which ever you choice have it assessed to fit you or if in gym learn to adjust seat appropriately.

If it pain above or below knee cap previous e comments from physio bob stand true.
