Rub your ankle with Apple cider vinegar till dry rub again do it several times a day Johnny Storm
Major problem / Symptomatic Areas
Calf, Achilles - Posterior - Left
Ankle - Left
Foot - Posterior - Left
I've recently seen a physio and been given exercises for an old ankle injury. However after 10 days of doing these my ankle is swollen and the ankle and calf are aching. Could this be due to the exercises and it's just not used to the movement? I don't know whether to continue or not....
Background:
I sprained my left ankle a few times when I was younger (have been told I score highly for hypermobility) but then about 8 years ago I tripped and fell down stairs, causing a very serious sprain on pretty much all of the ligaments around the ankle and foot. I had scans and it wasn't broken.
I had physio once a week for 2 months once the acute injury had calmed down and it got much better, although the dorsiflexion never went back to what it was and I have a tendency to roll my ankle. It can also quite stiff in the mornings.
In ordinary every day life its ok. I can go to the gym , do zumba etc and it aches a little by the end but it doesn't stop me doing anything. However over the last year or so I've been taking a dance class which uses totally different movements and noticed that my ankle was hampering me with these. It gets tired quicker and has less 'spring' in it. It also seems to be throwing off my knee and my hip. I decided to see a physio recently who gave me orthotics for my shoes due to over pronation on both feet and a list of exercises to do 3 times a day to try and regain the dorsiflexion in my ankle and mobilise my calf muscle in the left leg which she said was very tight.
I've been doing these for 10 days and the last couple of days my ankle has been somewhat swollen and feeling achey/tight. It's not hugely swollen but it's definitely visible, particularly down the back and along the inside down to the foot - there's no definition to it, whereas the other one is quite slim and bony! - and it just aches constantly, but no sharp pain or anything. It also aches up my calf and the outside of my knee.
Is this because of the exercises and should I continue or stop?
I'm not due to see the physio again for another 2 weeks....

could well be that the intensity and frequency of the exercises together with the orthotics is just a bit too much. After all this time the missing dorsiflexion wil not like being refound in 10 days. Why not give your physio a quick phone call for advice? She did the assessment after all. I would advise a patient to call if an intense or worrying reaction took place and then probably reduce either frequency or speed or intensity of some off/all off the exercises and let it calm down a bit.
