Pain in tendon behind my knee

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi,

I've been having this problem for a long time now. I partially ruptured my ACL about 5 years ago. It was originally diagnosed as a simple contusion and I just got on with my life. But after the injury (that is about 4 and a half years ago) when I started playing football again, I would often get a pain in the tendon on the left side behind the knee that I injured. Then about 2 and a half years ago, I started to find it more difficult to simply walk and I went to see a physio to consult whereupon I learnt that I had a great deal of muscle wasting in my right leg (hamstring quads and calves), although I did rebuild quite a bit of that muscle back, a bone seems to have shifted in my knee and is now slightly sticking out the right side of my knee (this is only visible when I extend the knee fully). My main problem now is thta very often the pain in the tendon mentioned earlier pops up seemingly rather randomly and it prevents me from walking as it is a very sharp pain that is felt when I extend my knee and even more so if I extend it and put pressure on it. It goes away with varying degrees of rapidity (10 minutes to 2 days) but it is very handicapping as I always feel I have a damocles sword above my head and that it could come along at any moment. I have been to see several physios/doctors, and although they all agree I have partially ruptured my ACL and muscle wasting, nobody seems to know what this pain in the tendon behind my right knee is and I would welcome any input or similar experiences.

PS( I should also mention that in addition to the ACL problem I also have pieces of cartilage loose in my knee asd well as slight meniscal tear)

Re: Pain in tendon behind my knee

I had right knee accident 4 years ago..I hit a concrete block..I had knee surgery repaired complex meniscus tear and debridment plica and fat pad. My entire leg went weak, muscle atrophy and massive pain. I really struggled after surgery. I could not even roll my foot to walk...I roll my foot now when I get to toes my boo tom knee still hurts. I also get back of knee inside pain as its pinching...I get my PHYSIO to stretch it out. But it does come back...I had a recent MRI. It shows meniscus is staring to tear back of the knee. My patella is out of tracking also causing pain with tendon rubbing against it...it feels like a pencil being jabbed in on light touch...I still limp to this day. Chronic pain and have CRPS around the knee groin to calf. It's a lot of hard work and dealing with fatigue. I have issues of sitting and standing. Sitting is worst for me. Lying in bed is best for me. It's a slow process to heal. I've read a medical report this could last for 8 years if not its permanent.

    Hi,
I would suggest you to see knee surgeon. If you have ACL tear of grade >3, you may need to go through ACL repair surgery along with that Doctor will repair your meniscus and take out all loose cartilage tissue from the joint space. If loose pieces of cartilage tissue persist for long time, it might cause OA problem early to age. Meanwhile, you take physical therapy sessions, there are few exercises which are restricted in ACL injury specially Isotonic Quadriceps strengthening training and some movements like cross legged position etc. Once your healing start and you gain some strength in muscles, you can resume your all activities and movements. Quadricpes muscle is strengthened with closed chain exercises. This pain in tendon might be because of your gait pattern due to ACL injury, still if you provide more details, might be I will able to help you more. Thanks
