    Please HELP(ankle)

    Hi im new here,
(sorry for my grammar im not good at english)

I've found this site and it looks good so i registered here and hoping someone will help me.

Its been two years since my left ankle sprained while playing basketball the game I love, I think it was a 3rd stage because I cant walk in almost 2 weeks. Then after the swelling went off i returned to play basketball even if its not 100% healed, I knew nothing about rehab at that time. I was just 16. then a couple of months have passed my ankle sprained again and again and again in the past 2 years in between. I think four or six times. Right now, i felt very uncomfortable with my left ankle. I went to a doctor, told me to do some theraphy but still didnt work so i stopped and trying to rehab it by myself by doing some stretching on my ankle. Everytime I play basketball i cant perform 100% because of this I cant do quick lateral movements. and BTW, my ankle have been deformed since then.

Please help me what to do?? what rehab program fits my situation? Oh man this really piss me off. I cant play 100% basketball and my dream to become a professional player..Help me pls..tnxx

It appears that in the absence of a structured rehabilitation programme you have now created gross ankle instability. It is difficult to say with any certainty what the problem is, but it may involve significant joint laxity considering you have had 6 sprains?

Although the muscles can help you to overcome some of the issues you are having, very sports specific proprioceptive and biomechanical training (on a daily basis) would be necessary to get you back into peak shape. This may take months, but should be done with close supervision of a physiotherapist. Do not believe a doctor will solve the problem.

    Regards

    Re: Please HELP(ankle)

    Thanks for the reply.

What if i like to treat it by myself? Can you tell/show me some exercises that I can perform just b pay myself? thanks! It is difficult for me to consult to physiologist and visit im not that rich toy multiple visits

Yes I have had 4 or 6 sprains, but 2 of them was not that severe

What do you mean by biochemical training? I know proprioceptive, that is balancing right? I will just stand on my left foot then balance, is that it?

    hi friend
my sincere advice to you is to consult a physio and undergo a detailed examination.because any treatment designing will be efficient if is is based on the understanding of the deficits.
you should concentrate to strengthen the muscles which helps to move the foot up and to the outer side called peroneals.they are considered to be the muscle playing a major role in ankle stability

Thanks for the advised my friend, I will soon consult a physiologist.

After a tons of researched, I figured out that my situation is a recurrent ankle. DO i need a surgery? I dont want to undergo a surgery whatever the case is, Is that possible? even if the doctor say that i need to undergo a surgery?

    Re: Please HELP(ankle)

    hi friend
i read about ur problem, sorry my grammer is also not gud so try to understand my english. In ur last message u wrote abt some exercises n home treatment.i m physiotheraist i m gonna tell u some exercises n home treatment, try it, i think it relieve ur pain little bit.
Firstly if ur swelling is relieved then give a little bit of heating to ur foot
If swelling is not relieved completely then go for ice therapy
Secondly after giving heating or icing according to ur sweeling go for movements of foot in water,if swelling is there then do movement in cold water,if no more swelling is there then do movements in hot or leukwarm water(movements like medial, lateral, upward n downward)
    Do carefully
Apply crepe bandage to ur ankle to stable it during walking
    Do strenthening exercises
Do all these things twice a day
I think u'll feel better with in one week(Dont forget to apply bandage)
Atleast once you should consult physio
    take care

    Re: Please HELP(ankle)

    Hello cheema.

I did what you said, except the water thing. I felt good, the pain went down a bit. But I still cant play basketball without pain. What else can you recommend beside moving in the water? Im also confused why my bone on my left ankle have been deformed? The bone on the side of the ankle, you know what i mean? I dont know how to explain what it is, sorry. Btw, I dont know if my ankle is still swelling or what. How am I suppose to know? Thanks.

I made a routine for my ankle:

    1. Balancing on my left ankle , eyes closed. 20 mins
    2. Using Thera Band for strengthening. in four sides of the ankle. Put ice after for 10mins

    3. Ding tons of strengthening

What do you think? Do my ankle will be back to normal by doing this everyday? Thanks a lot

    Re: Please HELP(ankle)

Hi "BaLLer9". I'm going to try to bring together what others have said as it may sound like we're all disagreeing but really there are a few key messages...
    1. You really should ensure you have a full assessment by a physiotherapist. They will be able to tell you the state of the ligaments in your ankle by doing appropriate stress tests. (i.e. are they lax / torn / relatively normal) These you can't do yourself.
Based on this, the therapist would be able to give you a better idea of your prognosis...(how long a recovery is expected / is bracing necessary / is a surgical consult necessary).
They will also be able to appropriately progress a rehab program for you.
    2. If you are willing to do your own rehab program at home THAT'S GREAT! This type of exercise doesn't always need daily supervision from a physiotherapist. It just requires that you can have follow-up for reassessment and progression. In between appointments, you can continue to work your butt off at home!! And yes, daily commitment to exercises is important (3 days a week doesn't cut it!).
    3. Although icing, water, strapping may make it feel better particularly after a recurrent sprain, it won't "make it better". They are all good tools to get you comfortable through your day but it is still going to take exercise on your part.
    4. The rehab program you made for yourself is a good start. But they are very much low level exercises and gradually should be progressed to get to more sport-specific movements required for basketball. Again....it would be very useful to consult a physio (in person) for some guidance after an appropriate assessment.
    5. As for your concern about surgery.... There is absolutely no way anyone can tell you if you need surgery or not unless they fully assess your ankle (which again, needs to be done in person). If it's any consolation, I have not seen many ankle sprains that have needed surgery so it's definitely not the norm. However, you REALLY need to have this ankle assessed, listen to what the findings are and ask all the same questions of the physiotherapist that is assessing your ankle.
    Good luck!

    Re: Please HELP(ankle)

    Hello..

I called all the available hospitals here in our area, unfortunately there are no physiologist on here. Btw, im from Philippines you know its a third world country so the medical situation here is not that advance compared to other countries. So I guess it will be very hard for me to find a physio in here. But I will try and try to find one. Oh man! Im starting to lose hope of getting back my ankle to normal.

Can you you guys help me again..?

How can I know what is the situation of my ankle? If I do the Wikipedia reference-linkMRI process, will you guys know if i tell you the results? But it is expensive in here, that is not my 1st option.

What else can I do?? I really want to get back my ankle so I can start practicing basketball and play college ball. Im 18, and got some skills to play ball but I cant because of ankle problems..

I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO...

    God, help me..

    Smile Re: Please HELP(ankle)

    hi
when a patient presents with acute injury,we limit our assessment based on severity and irritability.thorough subjective history will be collected primarily.the treatment is designed based on this.main line of management is relative/absolute rest to the part.if investigations-i mean ultrasonograpy,Wikipedia reference-linkMRI then we will get a picture .ligament tests is not done immediately as the pain and spasm wont allow to deduct any relevant info
    cheers

    Taping
Thanks Linbin, how long can we wait ,is there any specific grade on pain scale ????,i have read that since granulation tissue formation starts by about 3 day after injury and it is important to mobilize the joint so the the new fibrous tissue is laid along the stress lines which is specific to the role of the ligament and if we dont know what the injury is how and what r we going to mobilize?and are there any specific details in the subjective history that will differentiate muscular injury from the ligament injury????????
    regards
