Hi i was wondering if you have had your credentials evaluated and meet all the requirements? Did you need to top up any credits at all?

    Thanks, James

    Hi James,
yes, everything is finally done! Took me 2 years to get to this stage.
I gave 3 CLEP exams to top up my credits. As I am not a UK graduate, am not sure how it works for the UK trained physios.

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

Well congratulations on achieving what seems to be the impossible! The FCCPT are evaluating my credentials at the moment but i am sure i will need to top up credits also. Can i ask a few questions please.
Where did you graduate from? How did you get the extra credits through CLEP, do you have to be in the USA to sit these exams? How long did it take to study and then take the exams? Did you use the FCCPT Plan service? Are you studying for the NPTE or have you passed already?

Sorry for all the questions but i havent spoken to anyone who has achieved this the way you have

    Thanks, James

    Hi James,
I graduated from India and am currently working in London.
You can take CLEP exams in London. I guess, that wud b ur best option.
I did use FCCPT plan service, but didn't find it very helpful.
I've recently started studying for the NPTE. Hoping to give the exam in May.

    Hi Deepti,

It sounds like youve had quite a journey already! Thankyou for the information, i wish i was in your position and able to study for the NPTE.

Can i ask what CLEP exams you took? I have fallen short in chemistry, physics, maths, humanities and psychology but dont think i need to take all of these for 50 credits. How many credits were you short?
Also did you take the clep exams online? Where did you take them?

    Thanks again, James

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

    Hi James,
I took CLEP- Introductory Psychology, Human Growth and Development ( 3 credits each) and Chem ( 6 credits).
I'd originally applied for GA state through FCCPT and was short of approx 20 credits in all the subjects that u've mentioned. However, instead of reapplying for GA, I applied for NY state (a complete different process) but got approval this time )

From the info that I'd gathered, the general credit requirement is between 42-60 credits, depending on the state that you are applying for. Some of these subjects are Core subjects, i.e. you'll have to take those exams!! Having said that, some of the states are a bit relaxed with their criteria and may approve your application, if u meet their minimal GC requirement.

Re CLEP, it is a CBT ( computer based test). MCQs. 50 % is the passing score.
There is an examination centre in London. You can check their website for more info. re exam centre, exam syllabus, credits etc.
The administration fee ( 50 UKP) is more than the exam fee ( 70 USD), which is crrazzzy!!! But, still cheaper than all the other options that I'd looked at.

    I hope this helps.

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

    Hi Deepti!

Thanks again for divulging soo much information. This is such a long and painfull process but if i can get to take the NPTE then it may all be worth it!

Thinking about what you said about NYS i asked the fccpt what credit number would be for this state but they said i have to go through a completely seperate process through the NYSED. On theire website though they say i need to have my credentials evaluated by an independant body such as the fccpt so im a bit confused! Who and how did you have yours evaluated. Did you have send of all your academic bits again to the NYSED?

Im also looking at CLEP courses which i can take at that centre in London. Its just some of the courses i need to take are physics and chemistry with lab. Did you fall short in these subjects too? how did you get around this?

Sorry to keep on asking complex questions but youre the only person who seems to have got to the NPTE satge!!

    Thanks, James

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

    Hi James,
For NYS, it is a completely separate process. I'd applied through FCCPT...their role is to collect and verify all the documents and then they send everything to the NYSED for evaluation.
I gave CLEP- chem and had submitted it to the NYSED. I am not sure whether they accepted it or not...as I didn't get any credit eval report from the NYSED.
However, I did get the approval letter

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

Hi Deepti i still a little confused as the FCCPT said i should contact the NYSED and applyt through them. It sounds different to how you did it? Did the FCCPT just send on the documents for you?

ALso with the clep exams you took. Did you use the one big study guide you can buy on the net or did you use other sources? How long did it take to learn the material before you sat the exams?

    Thanks James

    Hi James,
Here is the link for NY verification process through FCCPT.
Foreign Credentialing Commission on Physical Therapy

Re CLEP, i'd used CLEP books and had used some other ref books. I studied approx for 4 weeks for Intro psycho and human growth/dev. I found chemistry very hard and it took me approx 4 MONTHS to learn chemistry!!!

here is another link, this will give you some idea re CLEP subjects difficulty level.

    Hi Deepti,

Once again thankyou for all your help. Im going to apply to have the FCCPT send all my bits to USED and see if i fall short on the gen ed credits. Can i ask how many credits the FCCPT said you were short in gen ed?

Maybe one day we celebrate in New York having finally made it!

The exams are held all the time i think all across test centres in the US. Check the FSBPT board website under the NPTE, should help.

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

    hi James and Deepti,

I am a UK educated Physiotherapist also about to enter into the confusing world of applying to work in New York!! I've been reading through your posts and it looks like I'll be going through what you are very soon.

As you are the only people I've seen so far that have undergone this process i'd be very grateful if you could answer a couple of questions. First, which process have you opted to under go?from what i can gather it is either the type 1 or the education credential review that we need. Additionally have you paid these fees up front? Also which documents from your University have you sent and how did you go about it?it seems like the FCCPT are very particular about this process.

Any help would be greatly received, I'm sure I'll have more to follow

    Many thanks

    Jay

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

    HI Jay,

Ill try and answer the questions. originally i applied for florida state throught the fccpt. This was the type 1 service which is what foreign pts need. I feel short in general ed after paying the fee.

SO im going to apply for new york state. As far as i can see the fccpt require all the same documents and they then send them to the NYSED to be evaluated also. Basically you have to pay the fccpt a fee and then the NYSED also. The fccpt have a form that you need to post to your uni and ask them to send the transcript, syllabus, certificates etc direct to the fccpt. They will then send them onto the NYSED and they will tell you if you have enough credit to take the npte.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi James,

I too am about to start this NY credentialing process with the FCCPT. Do you know how they verify your general education credits - do they contact secondary school for GCSE/Alevel stuff?
    Thanks, Caroline

Re: UK Physio taking NPTE ??

    Hi caroline

as far as i can tell they dont use GCSE which isnt great but they do eval A Levels. Im pretty certain that you need to go via the FCCPT and get the schools and uni to send of the documents with the forms from the FCCPT so they can be eval and then they send them to the NYSED.

I dont think you can apply direct to the NYSED. Have a look at the FCCPT website and how to get licenced in NY.

    Hope it helps. Good luck

    |Hi again Deepti,

I applying to NYSED but im not clear how i can pay for the application fee. Im under the impression an international bankers draft drawn against HSBC in $ would not be allowed. How did you pay them the $294?

    Thanks, James
