Volunteer work in a South Indian Hospice

Advertise your physiotherapy job on Physiobob's Job
I have recently returned from a visit to a Hospice for the destitute and dying in Tamil Nadu. There are 325 residents presently living there. A new wing has been completed with space dedicated for physiotherapy and occupational therapies in the hope volunteers will come - whether it be for a short or extended visit.

The Hospice is on five acres in a rural setting an hour and a half from Madurai by road. It is an inspirational place to visit - for the ecologicaly sustainable principles practiced and most of all for the dignity that is being restored to lives. Residents come from all castes and religions. The hospice is run by a Father Thomas, a Jesuit priest.

I am happy to answer any questions about staying there or to forward a short story about my experience as a visitor. Alternatively I can put you in touch directly with the Hospice.

    Regards,

    Helen

Re: Volunteer work in a South Indian Hospice

    Hi there,

I'm a newly qualified physio and was looking to do some volunteering work in South East Asia. Finding anything is proving very difficult and all much more expensive than I had hoped! I am would be very interested to find out more about this hopsice and the work you did there. If you would like to contact me by email, that would be great.
    It's [email protected]

Really look forward to hearing from you,

    Katy

Re: Volunteer work in a South Indian Hospice

    Hey Helen,
It looks like the post you put up about this was some time ago now, so I hope this mesage reaches you. I'm currently looking for voluntary opportunities particularly in southern india, so when I saw your thread I decided I would e-mail you straight away!
I'm a Physio with about 4 years experience, one of which I spent working with cancer and palliative patients. The thought of volunteering in a hospice as you described sounds excatly what I'm looking for. I wonder if you could tell me a little more about it? and if you think opportunities still exist there? I have a few friends who live in Tamil Nadu whom I met when I worked in a hospital near Mangalore just before I qualified. So geographically this would also really suit me. Can you tell I'm keen??!!! My e-mail address is [email protected] - any information would be really appreciated Helen,
    Regards,
    Rob
