Hi,
I am trying to research inspiratory/respiratory muscle training for an essay, however I am not able to come up with much. If anybody has any references or just generaly tips for searching etc, please get in touch.
Thanks
Jigs

Is this in regards to any particular pathology?
There is a new article from clincal rehab in regards to respiratory muscle training in MS:
Breathing-enhanced upper extremity exercises for patients with multiple sclerosis
Clinical Rehabilitation, Vol. 21, No. 7, 595-602 (2007)
I would guess that you've done all the usual medline searches etc.
What searches have you done?
Have you used all the possible synonyms.
Also - have a good look at the references of any articles that you do have.
Look at the references for the relevant chapter in any textbooks that you have.
Sorry yes, its in relation to cystic fibrosis. All the relevant articles from the few references are slightly too old. I've done all possible searches on pubmed, pedro, ovid etc, and nothing comes up unfortunately.
I'm beginning to believe that there isn't enough evidence to write an essay on this topic....but i live in hope.
Thanks for your help
Have you tried searching for PEP/AstraPEP/PEP masks? It's something that is used quite a bit in some countries as a respiratory muscle trainer and so maybe searching for a few treatment modalities might come up with a bit more? You've probably tried this already but I thought it worth suggesting!
Hi Jigs,
Do you have:
W. DE JONG, W. M. C. VAN AALDEREN, J. KRAAN, G. H. KOËTER and C. P. VAN DER SCHANS (2001) Inspiratory muscle training in patients with cystic fibrosis. Respiratory Medicine Volume 95, Issue 1,Pg 31-36
K. Chatham (1999) S12.2. Pump failure and inspiratory muscle training in CF.
The Netherlands Journal of Medicine, Volume 54, Supplement 2 Pg S12-S13
Whilst its always best to get evidence directly associated with the condition your essay is on, the next option you have is to look at the best available and this may mean looking at conditions similar to CF - perhaps ones in which purulent secretions, fatigue and dyspnoea etc are a feature (eg. COPD etc.). Although there will obviously be some stark differences between conditions, and limitations to this strategy - as long as you highlight/acknowledge what these are and the implications this would probably be ok. Moreover, this will allow you to demonstrate your ability to think critically and use available evidence creatively - so you may get better marks.
Hope this was of some use and good luck,
Rachie
