    joint awareness position test

    Taping
    Heya

I know of the joint position test where you use a bubble ergometer and take the joint through full range of movement and ask the patient to reposition their joint to the point you would have previously demonstrated.

Does anyone know of a joint position awareness test you could use without using a bubble ergometer for the ankle joint, for example a quick test someone could do at home?

    Thanks for any help

    Re: joint awareness position test

Are you talking about propreoceptive testing? if so, hold the big toe/ankle on the lateral and medial aspects. ask the patient to close eyes and tell you which position the toe is in, up or down. you can also just eyeball the test you are describing.

    Re: joint awareness position test

ok cool thanks, there isnt anyway they'd be able to test this themselves just on there own do you think? thinking this would be quite difficult... was thinking marking points on a wall or something like that but that would be easier to do with knee, ankle is quite difficult!

    Re: joint awareness position test

with thw tests you then work your way up each joint. Usually you can tell the deficit by which joints are affected. so a less severe deficit may only have lost propreoception in the small joints (fingers) and more severe in the bigger joints (elbow/shoulder)

I dont think it would really be necessary to test at home, as it is only an assesment and further treatment will be required to either increase the propreoception or work out ways to conpensate for the problem.

Other propreoceptive tests for ankle could be single leg standing, and using wobble boards etc which would also be a treatment for more advanced patients.

    hope this helps

    Re: joint awareness position test

    Must have Kinesiology Taping DVD
I think get them one leg standing with the eyes closed - on or off a pillow depending on their ability. Best place is infront of a kitchen sink so they can hover the hands in the sink and if they fall they'll catch themselves easily.
Thus the test and treatement is how long they can maintain the position without falling - the patient is testing themselves each time by timing to see how long they can do it (someone else can time for them).
Good progressions are minitramps (rebounders), wobble boards, and doing on tip toe (my favourite because it's horrendously difficult). - eyes closed and eyes open. working towards being able to do it on tiptoe on a pillow eyes closed. Depending on the age of the patient you can say they should be doing it for 30 sec or a minute or 2 minutes.
