I think maybe you hit the nail on the head with that one. Perhaps just some overuse of the lateral stabilizers where they begin joining onto the bone. Perhaps try some soft tissue massage over the tender areas in the line of the leg. If it's slowly getting better this would seem normal. If you're in doubt get in for a one off assessment with your local sports physio.
