    How to treat Calf Strains??

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi there,

I am looking for some help for my mum who has suffered from a calf strain for about fifteen years now. The pain stars in the middle of the calf area and goes down to her ankle and is of course worse after she has walked too much.

Does anyone know the best type of treatment for this condition?

And also if there is anything that would cure the condition completely?

    All help gratefully received.

    Many thanks,
    Gordon.

Re: How to treat Calf Strains??

    Hello Gordon,

First I'd get your mom to the doctor to get her checked out for any vascular issues, which can show up just as you say, she starts walking and she gets terrible calf pain. Two types of vascular issues. Could be an issue in the spine where over time the space has reduced so that when walking and the spine goes into extension further reducing the space and so compressing, you'll notice your mom stops and bends over and everything gets a little better.

If it's just tight calves causing the issue, there are great stretches that are easy to do. But you need to check out the first because if that's what's happening, the stretches will do nada.

    All right,

Let us at first, hope fast full recovery for yours' Mum ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the period of pain seems very long!!!!!since that she didnt asked for a help!!

    Any how:
Is she an obese women ?
may be suspected to being have varicose veins!!
may be suspected to being have ischemic claudications? in case if she havent neurologic problems??
What was the nature of her job?? [just in case]

All the above suggestions may be not accurate? as its difficult to diagnose via internet? Your mother needs to see a proper specialized physician soonly!!

    Hope these would help!

    Good luck

    Hi ViolaBlue,

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

It is definitely a calf issue as the pain does not get better at any time if she has been walking for a long while and so I would expect going to see a physiotherapist for the stretches and massage treatment might be the best option.

    Many thanks.
    Gordon.

    Thanks Junior_physiotherapist,

My mum is not overweight and does not have any of the conditions you mentioned. She used to be a sewing machinist sewing shower curtains etc.

I just think that it has to do with her age now as she is 77 and the condition has been with her for a while. She has visited the doctor and tried various treatments including Physio and Chinese accupuncture with limited success. It is possible with these treatments that she did not attend any of them long enough to get a full cure for the problem and so we are having to look for suitable treatments now.

Would our best option for this time of injury (calf muscle strain) be a physiotherapist who might specialise in sporting injuries? As you often hear about soccer players and other sports stars suffering from calf muscle injuries.

Many thanks for all your help.
    Gordon.
