    Partially Ruptured Achilles Tendon

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
My boyfriend was told on Friday he may have partially ruptured his Achilles tendon; he was put in a back slab for up to 6 weeks with his foot pointing upwards as he was unable to point it forwards due to the pain. He is hoping it will be on less than 6 weeks, what is the chance of this? Also we have to go to the Fracture Clinic on Wednesday - what are they likely to do or say? Nothing was said on Friday about the cast being replaced or re-cast at any point.

    Re: Partially Ruptured Achilles Tendon

    Hi there,

What do you mean foot pointing upwards? like towards the shin?... thats not the greatest position to be casted in for a partial rupture. So please clarify that for me.

6 weeks is pretty standard... depending on the extent of the tear. Likely when you go to fracture clinic they will examine what has happened since the injury and likely do an ultrasound to truely assess the injury... I'm guessing he hasn't had one yet, or it was inconclusive because of swelling and hense it's only possibly a partial tear?

Likely the cast will be replaced, depending on the type of tear he may end up in fiberglass or may end up in a moon boot. so you won't know till wednesday when you get some more answers.

for now I suggest just relax and take it as it comes. Get him to listen to the pain, don't push it as it could complete rupture and have faith in the tests they will do to assess the extend of damage.

    cheers,
    pudding

    Re: Partially Ruptured Achilles Tendon

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well; they initially asked him to point his foot forwards for them to cast it, but he was unable to do this due to the pain so they cast it with his foot in the normal neutral position (as if you were laying on your back on a bed for example and your toes would be pointing to the ceiling), hope that makes a little more sense.

They have initally casted him in neutral because of the pain... thats fine. Usually your slightly pointing your toes because that is less painful, but they have just gone with the symptoms. It' happens.

    Aircast Airselect Short Boot
We've since found out that due to excessive exercise about 3 years ago when he was going to the gym 5/6 times a week an eextra bone has grown between the tendons in his ankle which is causing the pain and swelling. They took the cast off and gave him a boot, he has to have an ultrasound on his ankle to see if the tendons are permanently damaged and whether surgery is needed; he also has the physio in 2 weeks.
