    knee pain for 2 years

    hi,

I have been diagnosed with CMP/lateral patellar compression syndrome by a hospital doctor (orthopedic surgeon) 2 months ago, after suffering from pain in my kneecaps for 2 years.
I believe this was brought on by excessive action of getting up from the floor to standing using lots of strength from the knee everyday after I gave birth to my baby. At that time, I always stand up from lying down position by pushing myself up, as well as using my hands to "lift" my body up by pushing down my thigh to achieve the lift (if you can imagine the action).
Knee pain came soon after 2 months of this, and i had pain in both knees. my left knee has almost no pain now, but my right knee is quite bad. This is maybe (??) due to the fact that my right leg is my master leg and i use this leg than the other more often than not.

I have classic symptoms of knee pain after prolonged sitting down with knees bent (eg sitting at office desk), or kneeling down. I will hobble with pain when i get up, but after 5-10mins of continous walking, the pain will go off gradually. I have no pain when I'm climbing stairs or walking or running. All pain comes from prolonged sitting/kneeling/squatting.

On bad days, my knee will throb with pain, sometimes at night. I cannot bend my knee (my favourite sleeping position) at night when i sleep.

I have seen the physio at the same hospital twice, and will have more visits with her (spaced at 1.5 weeks apart) and has been given exercises that I have to do at home, typically stretching exercises that strengthen my thigh's, hip's various muscles.

I am also on glucosamine pills, at 1500mg a day, as prescribed by the doctor.

    My follow questions:-
-The physiotherapist says that with daily exercises, I should be recovered in minimum 4sessions (of 1.5 weeks apart) of therapy with her. However, I have to admit that I am somewhat slack in my home exercises but I am seeing no improvement at all even though I have been doing the exercises for a month. Does the exercises get you recovered quickly, or do they need a long time to achieve results?
-I have tried to search for taping online but (perhaps due to my lousy online skills) I can't seem to find any. How does it work?
-What other things can I try?

Re: knee pain for 2 years

Exercises can help a lot but it always depends on the kind of injury and the kind of exercises. Stretching exercises should be okay but it surely takes some time to achieve results.

sounds like your pain has an inflammatory aspect to it. sore after rest, warms up with exercise. are you taking any anti inflammatory meds? is the knee hot, red, swollen in any way? how are you feeling generally? tired/fatigued?

    hi,
Please check for the Patellar retinacular tightness and ITB tightness which may significatly alter the joint mechanics of PF joint.Even a tight hamstring and tight tendoachilles may also contribute for the increase JRF. do exercises in CKC which is safer than OKC. REgards,

    Taping
I'm assuming your diagnosis is correct.
    Some things you can try:

Rolling a tennis ball up and down the outside of your leg (your iliotibial band) Keep doing your exercises and stretches as this really is the main thing that is going to help you.

Google patellofemoral taping on you tube. There are some good video instructions on there.
