    Prenatal and Postpartum Exercise

I am an Australian trained physio who moved to US in 1973 and founded the Women's Health Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. This is my specialty, and I trust you will find all the info you need from my book, Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year, the 4th edition revised in 2003 (available from www.elizbethnoble.com).
I also have taught an Instructor Training in Prenatal and Postpartum Exercise for two decades, with demo classes of pregnant and postpartum moms as part of the seminar. All the techniques can be used for one on one treatment, or in a class setting.
Please email me at [email protected] if you have any specific questions.
Keep up your good work! This is very important work so that women feel empowered to trust their bodies for birth.

    Dear Friend,

I would like to give you some tips on the antenatal and post natal physiotherapy which may help you as i believe.

During the antenatal time , you should try to do the valsalva manoevre. Try to hold your breathe after your normal inspiration or if possible a deep inspiration. Also take care of your back especially the lower lumbar region as it may go for hyper lordosis during carriage . Always sit with your propre back support. People used to neglect the back during this time.

In post natal , after one month you should strengthen your Transverse Abdominus muscle which may become slack after the pregnancy. Strengthening is very important as its the core stabilisation of the lumbar region.

Take a deep inspiration then take a deep expiration . remember that the tummy should go inside in your expiration , hold your tummy and leave your breathe. Try to keep for few seconds and increase the time duration as u go on. Its difficult for the first time , but easily it can be practised.
Please note that this procedures should be done only after a proper advice from your gynaecologists.
Thankyou very much for bearing with me , if you feel any difficulty in my reply please ignore it , thankyou again , all the best.

Re: role of exercise during and after pregnancy

    Taping
Thanks for all the links. I look forward to going through these over the next few days...

Being a therapist who "just" had a baby (11 months ago), I thought I was physically well-prepared for this whole change. I am the self-declared pelvic floor queen (haha)!! BUT I have realized there are some definite mechanical changes.....I have had much more difficulty with my return to running this year than any other year (I only ever run in the spring and summer...refuse to run in the winter!!).
Also, when I was pregnant I was really worried about how much exercise was too much. I took out the sports that posed the risk of falls and activities that were strenuous but kept up with hiking, walking. My friends thought I was SOOOO active throughout my pregnancy but for me, I lost alot in terms of my fitness level.
The physicians in my area give all their expectant mothers a package of information re. nutrition, breastfeeding, etc etc. I am going to be working with the physicians to develop recommendations re. safe options for exercise (mostly pre-natal) to add to this package. This interest area for me really came from seeing how difficult it was to find appropriate information on exercise and the resultant fear that I had that anything I did would hurt this developing fetus (yes, motherhood seems to be full of fear and guilt!!!haha)

Anyway, found out about the following group while at a conference last year:
    Sport C.A.R.E.
Sport Centre for Advanced Research and Education
    Women’s College Hospital
    (416) 323-7527
I got some information from them (handouts that they give expectant mothers) as a starting point. Attached are the exercise guidlines that they developed as well as a resource list (books mostly).
    Thanks.
