    Trampolining shoulder injury

    hi
i am a competitive trampolinist and have dislocated by shoulder twice. I am constantly moving my arms from above my head to by my side and it is in this movement that it dislocates always when i through my arms forewards.
It is 8 months since it last dislocated and recently it has given me some difficulty. It feels very loose and as if it is going to dislocate all the time when i am training.
My shoulder is lax and also hyper extends - i was wondering if there is any way i can tape or strap my shoulder to give it some support so i can compete in 2 weeks time.

    Any ideas appreciated
    Thanks

    Re: Trampolining shoulder injury

Hi, there are ways of taping your shoulder and many supports you can try out (which are easier and faster to put on than taping). Have a look at Shoulder supports.
They don't usually allow a full range of motion at the shoulder joint though.

The only real solution is to start strengthening your shoulder to prevent further dislocations and make it feel more stable.

Repetitive injury to the same or similar area requires very close examination, are there any results of scans?

By always, do you mean the 2 times it has dislocated?

A physiotherapist can perform a very simple test to examine shoulder laxity, have you seen a Physio?

Taping or strapping your shoulder is only a temporary solution to a chronic problem. A physiotherapy assessment, and treatment plan is the best bet to resolving this issue for sure.

    Please see above, thanks

    Re: Trampolining shoulder injury

    hi
no i have had no scans - they decided to wait and see if it dislocated again as they didnt think it was needed.
Yes both times it has dislocated it has been the same movement, although the two times it has dislocated my coach said that my arms started behind my head and were thrown forward
I have seen a physio, my shoulder has a lot of movement forwards and I can also take my arms quite a long way back verticaly beyond my ears (does that make sense)? I have been doing exercises since the last time it dislocated 8months ago. But it doesnt seem to be working. I am due to see my phyisio in the next week but my problem is that i need to compete in two weeks time so at the moment a tempory treatment is needed

    Thanks for help

That's a pretty disappointing approach to health care, to wait 'and see if it dislocate[s] again'! I think you can make an effort now to prevent this from happening, as I like to say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Yes both times it has dislocated it has been the same movement, although the two times it has dislocated my coach said that my arms started behind my head and were thrown forward
Was it an anterior, posterior, superior or inferior dislocation?

Yes indeed, by the sounds of it you are describing shoulder extension to beyond 90 degrees.
I have been doing exercises since the last time it dislocated 8months ago. But it doesnt seem to be working.
If you have been completing the same exercises for the last 8 months, and have not been re-evaluated, had treatment modified, or progressed in treatment I don't see why this would work. Physiotherapeutic exercises are not as simple as 1 exercise can solve all problems. Our bodies adapt to absolutely everything that we do. Whatever you do in every moment of your life your body adapts, be it in terms of bony changes, muscular changes, even changes in our brain! The key is determining what the fault, or tendency is towards a specific problem, identifying it, and creating a progressive management and treatment plan. I believe that based on the high level of mobility at your shoulder joint, the type of sport you participate in, and the recurence of injury that you need a specific programme that can help you to activate your shoulder stabilisers, and strengthen them for athletic fitness, as well as enhance their proprioceptive response during high loading for activity
I am due to see my phyisio in the next week but my problem is that i need to compete in two weeks time so at the moment a temporary treatment is needed
I would book a new appointment soon with a really good physiotherapist who can provide you an intense rehabilitation program. It is definitely your best bet.
    Thanks for help

    Re: Trampolining shoulder injury

    Taping
I am afraid i dont know the technical name for the dislocation, but it did go forewards. I was able to put it back in moving my arm accross my body - my coach said that there was a dip behind my shoulder and my arm was stuck almost at a right angle sideways to my body, if thats any help?
I will have a look for a sports physio then.
Can recomend anyone in Devon, Cornwall or Somerset?

Thank you very much for your help
