Hi Claire
I am also hoping to do something similar, and would be grateful for any information.
Hilary
Hi
I am heading out to Sydney in October of this year on a working holiday visa for 1 to 2 years and am hoping to work on a limited registration. I have now specialised in MSK physio and am hoping to get a job in this area. With the change to AHPRA that happened on the 1st July it now seems that the registration i will need will be limited registration in the public's interest. In order to get this I will need to get an offer of employment from an employer willing to provide supervision and write to AHPRA saying this. I will also need to send a form off to the Australian Physio Council with the offer of employment details as well as a lot of info about my degree course etc to prove that i cant get full registration (I graduated in 2006 from the University of Birmingham, England) at the price of $440, and this takes about 4 weeks to be processed.
I am happy to go through this process but my concern is finding an employer that will be willing to as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions or awareness of how practical this will be?
Thank you so much for any help
Claire

There is a shortage of physiotherapists in Australia and employers are very likely to be more than happy to offer employment and support your application. This system has been in place in Victoria and South Australia for several years and has not hindered applicants for limited registration. The difference now is that rather than the Board sending documents to the APC, the applicant must send them to the APC and then apply to the Board. This is due to the national law requirements.
You can search for jobs online at seek.com.au and physiotherapy.asn.au. You could also place an advertisement with physiotherapy.asn.au
Hope this helps you both - Australia does need experienced physiotherapists.

Hey guys.
Well, I am actually doing what you are proposing at the moment! I'm working in Melbourne at the moment. Been in South Aus before here and I came in Jan on a years Working Holiday Visa.
I initially got 'Limited Registration' with the board of South Australia back in January and got an offer of a job before I came out here. Then, with all the change on July 1st, my registration is now 'Limited Registration in the Public Interest', so yea: that is the correct registraion.
As the other post says, employers are more than willing to work with you on the process and fill in the 2 most important bits of your registraion which is:
a) a letter saying you will have a supervisor and have been offered work,
and
b) a copy of some form of professional indemnity insurance.
For the latter, most public and private hospitals will place you on there insurance, so it costs you nothing. If you work in private practice (which most MSK will be), then it's likely that you will need to get your own insurance, costs upto $800 for the year I think. CSP insurance doesn't cover you over here.
My advice is email physio managers about jobs and try to get it all sorted before you leave the UK. That's what I did back in December, and sorted out work in June for me to start in July. The process with the AHPRA is VERY SLOW at the moment due to all the change, and what you don't want is to be sitting in Australia with a visa ticking down and no work due to the registration not coming through.
With re. to the working holiday visa. You only get a years WHV here. You; have to do at least 88 days of work in fruit picking, construction, farming etc................in a 'rural' part of Australia (its all post code related, check out the visa website)
If you do that, you can apply to get a second WHV while your in Australia. Totally ridiculous if you ask me. But that might be something you fancy.
Claire: Few questions. How much experience do you have as a UK physio? For private MSK I think you may struggle with 'Limited Registration' in place. Mainly due to the 'supervised practice' aspect of the rules & regs of 'Limited Registration' and the amount of actual supervision someone in private practice can offer, but you never know.
You could get fully registered before you come here and save yourself a little bit of hassle you know. Do you have more that 12 months UK physio experience................and have you heard of the New Zealand route?
It's honestly not hard to find work as a physio here, it's just the registration malarky that's a pain.
Hope that helps.
Fire any more questions across if you need.
Liam.

Hi Liam,
Thankyou for the really useful advice. How are you finding working out there?
I qualified last year and by this september i will have my 1st years experience completed. I have so far worked 6 months in MSK and 6 months as a locum in the community. I am planning to come out to australia in march and would love to be able to keep my skills up along the way. Do you think there would be any chance of me getting limited reg to be able to work over there? I already have a WHV sorted.
Hilary and Claire have you had any further luck with your applications?
Thanks again
sarah
Work out here is really good.
Depends what you want to do I suppose. Im a city boy, so iv gone for the city option, living and working in Melbourne at the moment.
It's well paid over here! And the support is great. Lots of learning opportunities.
Youl be able to get limited registration yes, but it will take some time to process. So fill in all the forms as soon as your able, get it sent off, then look at getting in touch with people about work and if someone can be your 'supervisor' etc...........Wont be a problem in finding the work, youv just gota be organised :-)
Life is sooooooo good out here. Come Join!!!
Beats the UK NHS to the ground!!
:-)
Brilliant will get onto that asap! Cant wait now! thankyou
sarah
hello and it seems great really. well looking forward to be there as soon as possible. may be it will be very useful to go there once.
Hello
I am currently looking into working in sydney later on next year. All this information has been great as i was really confused on the process. I undsertand now that i have to get a limited registration. But does this mean that I am unable work in Sydney cause this is apart of New South Wales??
Also, I have 2 quick questions for ljrobbob. In your logs, you mentioned going through New Zealand. I've been looking into that route and i was just wondering if you had any information on it. I mainly wanted to know how long i would have to work in NZ prior to being able to work or get registered in Aussie.
The other question is: Are you working in a hospital in Melbourne? You had said that they offer a lot of support and training/learning opportunities. I qualified in Manchester and moved back to canada to get my competency exams over with. Now i'm working in a rural community as the sole physio with NO support. So i'm dying for a good supportive learning environment to start learning and developing my physio skills. Is this in anyway possible in aussie with limited registration??
thank you very much for your time
Have a great day in Melbourn, its a great city to be in!
Hello, just a quick add on from the last cause I didn't work it right. I was mainly wondering how hard it was to find work in a hospital in a big city with limited registration. As i understand the employer can/will hire if there is no other aussie qualified physio's. I would think people would all flock to the city.
Thanx again
Hey Shealan19.
Erm, im confused with what you mean.
If you get registered under 'limited registration in the public interest', then YES, you will be allowed to work in Sydney. And YES, Sydney is in New South Wales. If you get registered, you can work where you want.
With re. to NZ.
It'l take about 4-5 months to go through if you do it correct.
You need to have worked for at least 12 months where you qualified prior to applying.
Registration is not guaranteed, so if you dont satisfy the NZ board, they wont register you.
You DO NOT have to work in NZ if you get NZ registration.
You get NZ registration. Then if successful, you are eligible to apply for 'General Registration' with the physio board of Australia.
Finally.
I an on Limited registration. and iv had it renewed for another year in line with renewing my Working holiday visa. Yes, I am in a hospital, in the city. And yes, there is much support. I work with around 20 other physios. Work on my own, but there is so much support that you never feel isolated.
If you look around, you can find good work.
Hope that helps.
Liam.
Hello ljrobbob
Thanx so much for your reply! Sorry, I think I was a little confused when i was writing it! But your NZ information really helped. I was really struggling to find the answers to those questions.
It turns out I can't get a second working holiday visa so limited registration is not an option at this point. I had a holiday visa about 8 year ago when went tranveling to aussie and didn't work a full 88days in the needed area's. So i'm looking into sponsorship visa's.
I guess my main question to you was (i'll try and word it properly)- with limited reg and with the sponsorship visa, the host hospital has to prove that its in the 'public interest' to hire me. Which I understand as they have to prove or say that they can't find someone else to do the job. So in the bigger cities, wouldn't it be harder to get an employer to give you a job if most physio's (foreigne and local) head to the bigger centers for a job? How did you go about gettin a job in hospital in a big city?
Everything that you mentioned about your job sounds amazing and I only hope this works out
Thanx again for takin the time to answer my questions!
Get limited registraion 'supervised practice' then, it will be easier for you.
Need someone to be onsite 75% of the time you practice, so many hospitals will be able to accommodate this.
I just looked hard and got involved. It's the only way your going to find jobs really. Get looking, there are lots out there.
thanks
liam
Correct you are.
I'm from the UK, so mine was 3 years.
This thread is obviously directed towards my experiences of applying for registration.
Every application is individualised.

Hello,
Im a junior physio currently working in the uk and looking to work in Sydney or Melbourne next summer 2011. Ive been looking into limited registration, can you work for 12 months with this registration and renew it for another year if you extend your holiday working visa? Do you have to change employers at 6months aswell? Any advice would be great, thanks very much!
Sarah J
Hello, I'm sorry but I don't have any information on how to renew limited reg. To get a second visa though you have to do at least 88 days of seasonal work.
Hope this helps
Sorry for yet another question...
To apply for limited registration do you still need to complete all the exams that were compulsory under the ols registration system?
Thanks
Claire
Hi. This thread is VERY useful! I have a couple of questions if anyone can help...
Firstly, does anyone have experience of or know if it is possible to get Limited Registration or Full Registration with a UK Accelerated Masters Degree (2 yrs)? I do have clinical experience (3 yrs)?
Secondly, I'm a bit confused about the visa process - do you have to apply for a visa separately to applying for the registration? And if so, does anyone know how it works if you are going to Aus with your family ie my husband will be sponsored by his company - can I apply for registration on a dependant/spouse visa??
Thanks for any help!!
Emma

hiya
I have just graduated from my MSc (pre-reg) physiotherapy in Jan 2011 and have been offered a job working in S.australia for a private practice. I really want to go and make a good start to my career. I have been looking at all the options and because I don't have over 1 years experience it would appear I cannot apply for a permanent work visa? My other option is to do what many do and apply for the working holiday visa and then try register with the limited registratioin in the public interest. I would hope my partner would come out with me but as he works in the wine industry and not in trade, he doesnt qualify for the work visa either so wed both have to go out on the WHV.The only problem is,with the WHV you have to change jobs every 6 months, which doesnt offer the best job security and we want to make a go of it out there for more than 6 months to a year. Has anyone got any advice or alternative routs I could take. Is there potential to extend the 6 months on a holiday working visa if an employer makes an input?
any advice or information would be really appriciated, also, which should I should apply for first...my registration or the visa?
thanks ellen :-)
Hi everyone
All the information you have provided on this thread is so helpful but I was wondering if you had anymore advice with regard to working in Western Australia as they do not accept the limited registration option.
I hope to move there in Sept 11 as my boyfriend has been offered a permanent job in construction in Perth and the company are willing to sponsor him so he is sorted! I, on the other hand am not!
If anyone has any information about going through the full registration experience I would be most grateful. I am particularly concerned with what happens after you sit your exams.....there is very little information about the practical exams and how that aspect works (I know there is a neuro exam and my only experience has been a 5 week placement when I was a student).
Thanks for your time
